“In
Hope”
In hope, in love, in truth and trust
The theatre lives from dawn to dusk
The curtains rise, crowd voices fall
And suddenly the stage is all
One takes the stage, in song, in rhyme
Then lights fall dim- in perfect time
But time goes on, time goes on
The young turn old; the old are gone
And so it seems a loss of luck
When chairs lay bare and set is struck
When all is clean and tidied tight
With boisterous laugh and petty fight
With simple smiles and luscious curls
Yet these are things that time unfurls
And time goes on; time goes on
The young, the old, they carry on
Then suddenly in spark of dream
A light, a note, a line, a seam
A feather falls, a button drops
This night like slumber halts and stops
And casually the stage breathes calm
While passion lies in theatre’s palm
As time goes on, time goes on
The young come
through; the old stay strong
There is no class, no book, no game
That knows that pow’r of Shakespeare’s name
My
name and face may be forgot
Yet on that stage my presence not
The stage will hold my secrets deep
Though age may makes its hinges creep
But time goes on; time goes on
I take these tales, I move along
If theatre lives where passion lies
Then in my heart that passion thrives
I’ve learned to
breathe and to become
Just who I am-- a work undone
Now I go forth with hope and fear
An empty map, all runways clear
And time goes on; time goes on The world’s my stage
from dusk ‘til dawn
